The Impossible Family Portrait - Best Motivational Videos

This is one of those touching motivational videos that engage us, the audience, with a true story, one of anticipation and hope.

This spot opens with a Ugandan man who is standing in his living room next to a large projected image of his family in Uganda, although we don't yet know who these people are yet. The story about why he is standing there, and what it means to him, is about to unfold. He narrates his own story, telling us

that he misses the sights, sounds, and smells of his homeland. We see how he shops in a grocery store with modern conveniences in his new location, selecting vegetables and meat, and we see in contrast how his family shops in the open market back in his home country, selecting a live chicken, then killing it and carrying it home, feathers and all. Then we see him preparing a meal on a convenient stovetop, laughing as he is looking at his laptop and seeing pictures of his family back in Uganda. He tells us that he misses his son the most, and we see his young son waving to the webcam with Skype, and then on the other end, while in his kitchen, he sees his son waving on his laptop.

This concludes with the man's friend who helps project the Skype image of this man's family in Uganda on a wall in his new location living room, who then takes an impossible family portrait of the man with his family; himself with his distant family. The photographer then delivers a print of the man and his far-away family to him, who then promptly tapes it to his wall to remind himself of his family. He is so proud of his family, and thankful to have his first full family portrait.

This spot conveys a couple of important concepts to me: family is invaluable no matter how far away; also, we can miss the familiar things when they're far away, but through technology still get a little taste of 'home'.

I can imagine how this true-story spot came about. Most likely, Skype asked their customers to send in stories of how Skype has been meaningful to them. Among the many stories, the marketing group at Skype selected and shot this motivational video, and then they used this true story to promote their brand.
