The elderly man featured in this spot is obviously willing to do whatever it takes to move forward. He's even willing to attend classes where he learns the English alphabet, play Scrabble with his buddies, use flash cards with his colleagues to learn pronunciation, begin reading books at the elementary level, and make efforts at sounding out new words at a restaurant - with great receptivity. He places sticky notes on items in his home, and uses every available moment - even while waiting for the barber - to learn to read. He invests in himself, in his education, in his future.
The heartwarming part of this short story is that this elderly man does all this to reach his goal of reading his son's book. And when he does, his son is so proud of him.
What Harry S. Truman said about leaders, is it really true? I believe so. When I think of great leaders, great thinkers, leaders who have invested in me, often they're readers. Then when I see a father catch a vision like this, specifically to honor his son, investing hours and hours so that he can read his son's book, that touches me deeply!
It's no exception with sales leaders. Often leaders will invest in learning about their clients' interests, hobbies, families and heritage. Reading can broaden our understanding of others, and help us avoid repeating poor history decisions. And it helps us to understand scenarios so that we can confidently invest in other people. Wonderful books like the Bible, the Great Books of the Western World, and biographies are really worthwhile.
I'm interested in what books have inspired you.
