Learn It Young: Remember It Forever

Written by David Haneke | Sep 10, 2015 11:30:00 AM

This is a powerful motivational video which presses in the idea of learning things once, when you're young, especially when it could be lifesaving.

In Scouts, as a 9 year old, I remember learning how to drive a nail, how to build items out of wood, and how to recruit friends. I use these same skills today. In sales, we also 'learn young'. I've talked to several sales managers, and they agree that they'd rather recruit someone with no sales skills and train them the right way, rather than have to un-learn and re-train.

I think this short motivational video makes that point quite well. A young girl who has been caught under the waves at the beach is temporarily without breath, lifeless. Then her brother, approximately the same age of 10, carries her out of the surf and performs CPR on the sand. The camera zooms in and then zooms out to reveal that it's not her brother, but instead her father. After CPR, the girl can breathe again, and her dad cradles her in his arm and carries her out of the frame, presumably back to the warm spot on the sandy beach; he is obviously so thankful that he had learned life saving CPR skills at a young age.

Sales skills may not be life or death, like CPR, and yet, when we learn how to establish the need, answer objections and close the sale, then build a referral network, these skills go with us throughout life, in some sense saving our clients from imminent problems (and ourselves from financial issues).
